Mimic Print Artist's Text Effects in Draw
Here's instructions on how to mimic most of PA's text effects in Micrografx Windows Draw 6.
Multi Color Select each individual letter and change the fill color one by one.
Multi Outline Choose Line from the style gallery and explore the different line styles for different effects. Use the drop down list at the top of the style gallery for more options, or choose the customize button from the bottom of the style gallery.
Touching, Blended Double click the text frame, then highlight your text. In the text box that pops up, click the downward pointing triangle. Adjust the character and line spacing here.
Horizontal, Vertical & Box Strata Select the text frame, choose fill from the style gallery. From the drop down list at the top of the style gallery, select any of the gradient options and experiment with the different gradients. Customize your gradient by choosing the customize button at the bottom of the style gallery.
Anchored and Floating Shadow Type your text, then copy and paste it. Select one text frame, right click on it and choose convert to curves. Select the rotate/slant button and skew the letters to make them look like a shadow. Align the other text frame in front of the skewed text to give it the shadow effect. Play around with the angle of the shadow text to give it different looks. If you raise the other text frame slightly above the shadow text, it will appear as a floating shadow.
2 Layer Select text frame, choose the shadow button from the top toolbar, pick a color and apply. Choose customize, then shadow to adjust the depth and direction of the shadow.
3 Layer Select a text frame, then copy and paste it. Place the pasted text slightly lower and two one side of the original text frame, then select them both. Go to tools, blend, steps = 1. Another text frame will be placed exactly between the two. You may change the colors of each one individually. Experiment with the spacing and the number of steps for different effects. If you change the color of the two text frames to different colors before choosing blend, the new text will appear so that the two colors blend together.
7 Layer Select a text frame, choose the shadow button from the toolbar, then choose shadow attributes. Select soft shadow, and move the shadow depth slider to about the middle. Click apply. Experiment with shadow position, depth and different colors for different effects.
Block Same as above, but choose a block style shadow instead of soft. You can only choose a single color for a block shadow, for multiple colors, use the soft shadow option.
Block Vanishing, Block Perspective, Layer Vanishing, Layer Perspective Select a text frame, then copy and paste it. Change the color and resize the pasted text so it is smaller then the original text, and place it a few inches below the original text. Select both text frames and go to the tools menu, and choose blend. Enter a step value around 20. For Block Perspective, make the pasted text as tiny as possible before choosing blend. After choosing blend, ungroup the new text, select all the text and experiment with shadows to get different effects.
Layer Twist, Zoom Twist Select a text frame, then copy and paste it. Rotate the pasted text 90 degrees and place it directly over the original text to form a cross. Select both text frames and go to tools, blend, enter a step value of about five and apply. Again, experiment with different step values, colors and shadows for different effects. Also try placing the two text frames in different positions, or change their sizes before choosing blend to get different effects.
Arched Text Type your text. Draw a circle. Select the text and the circle and choose align text to curve from the toolbar. Choose the position for the text. Then with your circle selected choose customize and change the fill color to none and the line color to none. Your circle will become invisible, but the text still follows it's curve. You can resize the circle and the text will still follow its curve. Try it with different shapes, such as a curvy line, star or other shape.
Top and Bottom Arched Text Type your text in two frames, one for the top arc and one for the bottom arc. Draw a circle, then draw a line across the center of it. Select the circle and the line, then go to tools, slice object. Now you will have two half-circles. Select the top half of the circle and the top text frame, and align text to curve. Do the same for the bottom half. Change the line andfill color to none to make the circle halves invisible.
Keep in mind that most of these actions can be applied to any object in Draw 6, not just text. And there's a lot more you can do with text by converting it to curves and stretching each individual letter. Just remember that it looses the text attributes once you convert it to curves so you can no longer change the text or the font. Submitted by SC. |
