Wallpaper Striped Effect

To create a nice striped "wallpaper" type effect:

Draw a straight vertical line and then choose the "double line" (17th line effect) in the line gallery (which is in the Effects Gallery which must be checkmarked under the VIEW menu so it will show up on the right side of your screen).

You put this line at one end of where you want it, duplicate it, and put the duplicate at the other end. Then use the Blend (under the TOOLS menu)  to create more lines inbetween.  You can always lighten the color if you need to so that the stripes don't overwhelm your graphic.
