All About Layers
Pencil
Layers in draw can be either:

  • printing or non-printing
  • visible or invisible
  • locked or unlocked

Layers are great for templates because you can put guidelines, diagrams and special instructions on one layer and make it a non-printing layer.
I sometimes draw cropping marks on a separate layer and then I can hide that layer, but make it printable.

Sometimes I will put all my graphics on one layer, and the text on another, and the background on another which makes it a lot easier to select all the text on the page, or all the graphics. It also makes it much easier to select a background that may possibly be buried under many pieces of clipart.

If you put guidelines on a separate layer you can lock that layer which will prevent you from possibly accidentally moving your guidelines while working on your design.

If you have several of the same object and you want to play around with different color variations, put them on one layer, then you can easily Select All (ctrl-A) and play around with the colors without selecting the objects on another layer.

You can still work with your file as if there were no layers by right clicking on a layer tab and putting a check mark by "Edit all Layers". When you want to go back to having layers separate, uncheck that item. You can move an object from one layer to another by right-clicking it and choosing object properties.
